Welcome, summer!

01.06.2011

Summer at the beach and beach vocabulary were on the minds of everyone who attended the English Talk Lab on 05.28.11. American Peace Corps volunteers Barbara and Michael led the group in a word-match game with vocabulary such as jellyfish, starfish, jetty, surfboard, sand dune and barrier islands.
Members then discussed their beach experiences, their likes and dislikes and told funny and sad tales about swimming in the summer. Some recalled humorous stories, such as seeing a man who was so drunk at the beach that he tried to pull his pants on over his arms and head instead of his legs. A few told about people who drowned in swimming accidents. One of Kherson’s maritime academy students from Nigeria said someone saved his life while he was struggling in the water. He shared a laugh with other members when he remembered the time when a coconut fell on his head at a Nigerian beach.
Almost every one of the 22 people who attended said they know how to swim. Many said they were taught by parents, grandparents or other relatives. Photos.
