Easter, Traditions, Ukraine, USA.

09.04.2012

This week talk club had 39 participants!  Club began with introductions including our name and favorite color (and why).  The three top colors are blue, green and violet/purple.  Katherine gave a presentation on Easter traditions in the U.S. including sunrise service and the Christian traditions, how we dye eggs, Easter Bunny, Easter baskets, chocolate bunnies (and crosses), Easter outfits (boys and girls), egg hunts private and public, White House egg hunt/roll/activity day, and the traditional Easter meal dishes.  We then talked about Ukrainian traditions and which are similar to those in the U.S.  As a side topic we talked a bit about the origin of a few of our Easter symbols and traditions.  We then broke into six groups to match idioms with their definitions.  In honor of Easter, these were egg-themed idioms including 'go fry an egg', 'to lay an egg', 'egg on your face', 'to kill the goose that lays the golden egg', 'to put all your eggs in one basket' and 'walking on eggshells'.  The final activity of the meeting was to play a game of 'mad discussion'.  For this game, each group was given a set of topics; two group members at a time drew one topic each and then debated which topic is more important (we had among our mini-debates: birthday cards vs. dogs, Kyiv vs. opera, school vs. plastic spoons, etc.).
