Brief. Impressive. Ernest Hemingway
In a 1992 letter to Canadian humorist John Robert Colombo, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke recounts it thus: while lunching with friends at a restaurant, Hemingway bets the table ten dollars each that he can craft an entire story in six words. After the pot is assembled, Hemingway writes «For sale: baby shoes, never worn» on a napkin, passes this around the table, and collects his winnings. Was that story true or legend it is still not known. Ernest Miller Hemingway is one of the authors who are studied at high school. Do the students know well his biography and works? The 2nd year students of the Kherson State University, who continue their language practice at the Window on America center, had tested themselves. The visitors took part in the literary puzzle in English «Book stories or stories about books». They guessed «Truth or False» biography questions about foreign authors, tried themselves in «Rhymes» game, guessed the writers portraits, matched the names of the books and their main characters using an interactive whiteboard, and played the game «Who am I?».
After a break, the visitors had a conversation club meeting. Language warming-up is the best way to start any language training. Our guests watched a video about the fire at the hotel and developed their critical thinking skills «Who has the right to life?». According to the given situation, there is a fire in a hotel. Fourteen people are trapped on the floor. There is one working elevator, which holds a maximum of eight people. The elevator can go down once. Students had to decide which eight people they would save and why.
