English with Pleasure

2/18/12 – 6 participants
We began English club with introductions where we gave our name and something interesting about ourselves.  The first activity was a word guess and formation activity.  Students were given definitions of words and then must assemble a new word using the first letters of the words they guessed.  The next activity was to work on the tongue twister 'Betty bought butter, but the butter was bitter so Betty bought better butter'.  The kids each presented the tongue twister individually and then words slowly were taken out of the twister until the kids were stating it from memory.  Eventually, they got pretty fast with it.  Club finished with a few rounds of the UNO card game.

Club started with introductions giving our names and something we like to do.  Our first activity involved drawing a map of our journey from home to school; on this map, the kids were to think of five things they see on their journey for which they don't know the English name (i.e. letter box)..  The kids then presented their map and talked about their walk to school and we worked on the words they didn't know - some of these words included fence, street lamp, cannery, bench, and auto mechanic's.  The next activity was to build a long sentence using daily routine verbs and phrases.  The first student starts the sentence and each student repeats what came before and then adds their own activity/part of the sentence.  Once sentence began with "I get up at 8 and fly to the kitchen for breakfast."  We finished club with a few rounds of the UNO card game.
