Thanksgiving Day and children

29.11.2011

15 participants of ages from 8 to 13.  Many of the participants were returning we changed our introduction to include our name, a favorite thing and the area of town in which each participant lives.  Our topic for the meeting was American Thanksgiving.  Katherine introduced the holiday and we talked about the origins of the holiday, current traditions and symbols.  We played a game where participants were given different colored candies and they were tasked with getting all the same colored candies; they were to ask other participants for their candy and were in turn asked for theirs.  Afterwards, each participant told the group at least two things they were thankful for - unsurprisingly, most were thankful for their families.  We also talked about the American tradition of watching, on t.v., the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City.  We watched a video of the parade balloons being blown up and then watched video clips of the balloons being walked in the parade.  To finish the meeting, the participants made hand turkeys - in American elementary schools, each year at Thanksgiving, students make a tracing of their hand (which resembles a turkey, with the student's thumb being the head) onto which they write things for which they are thankful and decorate the feathers.
