Halloween at SpeakUp: The Stolen Mafia Game and the Mystery of the Witch’s Potion

Halloween is full of stories in which real-life customs intertwine with folk beliefs, legends, and folklore. This blend of history and mystery was the theme of a Halloween meeting of the SpeakUp Youth Conversation Club.

The club members discussed the origins of Halloween, its traditions, and its symbols - all in English. One question that came up was how bats became associated with the holiday. According to one theory, centuries ago, people lit large bonfires as part of autumn celebrations. The fires attracted insects, which in turn drew bats looking for food. Their silhouettes flying against the glow of the flames gradually became part of Halloween’s spooky imagery.

The Halloween spirit also shaped the language activities. In Halloween Taboo, participants had to describe holiday-related words without using the obvious clues. Mad Libs brought a different kind of fun: the group created a Halloween story by supplying nouns, adjectives, verbs, and other parts of speech to fill in the blanks of a prepared text. The unexpected word combinations transformed the original story into something entirely different, often with hilarious results.

There was a twist for those looking forward to playing Mafia. A witch had other plans and stole the game! To get it back, the club members had to complete her quest and track down all the ingredients needed to brew a magic potion.

The meeting unfolded in a lively, creative atmosphere. Halloween at SpeakUp had lots of legends, unexpected twists, and a few witch-made obstacles!
