How «Monopoly» Became the World's Most Famous Board Game
At the meeting of the Upgrade Youth Club at Honcharivka, we explored the history of one of the world's most famous board games - Monopoly. Most participants knew it as a game about buying streets, houses, and hotels, but few realized that it was never originally intended simply as entertainment.
Our club moderator explained that in 1904, American inventor Elizabeth (Lizzie) Magie created The Landlord's Game. Her goal was not to celebrate the accumulation of wealth but, on the contrary, to demonstrate how monopolies and the unequal distribution of land contribute to economic inequality. Over time, this idea evolved into the Monopoly we know today. We also learned that the game is now published in more than 37 languages, sold in 103 countries, and has been played by more than half a billion people throughout its history.
Of course, we didn't stop at learning the story; we started playing. Participants learned the rules right at the game board, using the instructions for the classic Monopoly set available at the Kherson Window on America Center, thanks to America House Kyiv. The first few turns raised plenty of questions, but before long everyone had mastered the rules, discussed their purchases, developed their strategies, and confidently navigated the board.
One game was clearly not enough; everyone is already looking forward to the next meeting to sit around the table again and see how well the skills they gained will work in a new game.
